May 18 - Downtown Hutchinson Facade Improvement Project

The "Santa Fe" block is about to get an old look. For many years two of the facades on the west side of Main Street between Third and Fourth Avenues have been concealed behind what Main Street preservationists call "aluminum slipcovers". This "Santa Fe" block of the larger Santa Fe District is an important historical link in our downtown as it is the only block with none of the original buildings having been replaced over the years. This block of adjoining limestone buildings still stands as it was first constructed.
Downtown Hutchinson's "Economic Restructuring Committee" recently announced that a major goal for facade improvements in the Downtown area is about to take a big step forward with the slipcovers coming off the Santa Fe Block. Committee Chair Victoria Crow reports that “Almost overnight you will see a remarkable transformation in the Santa Fe District. Our pilot block (West side between 3rd and 4th streets) is scheduled to have various façade’s removed, buildings repaired and cornice replicated to their original format. The major impact will occur in July with the façade removal from 305 through 307 North Main. The repairs and cornice replacement will be a much slower process but by early fall we should have a beautiful showcase.” The work will be done by the local Wray Bend Architectural Metal Co., Inc.
This project will be funded by a grant from Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka, Kansas and by the property owners in the block. The restoration project is the result of a lot of work by the Downtown Hutchinson Economic Restructuring and Design Committee members and the affected property owners.
